I am the campus police officer for Ayr Academy and have been part of the school team since 2014. My role within the school is an extremely rewarding one and is based around presenting targeted lessons to different year groups based on important subjects to keep people safe such as drugs and alcohol and their impacts on society, internet safety, crime and antisocial behaviour as the police often have a unique perspective in these areas. I carry out foot patrols in the local community during the school day and assist with developing projects and initiatives to raise the profile of the school in the community and strengthen links between young people and the police. I also visit Ayr Academy’s associated primary schools on a monthly basis to deliver talks in areas such as stranger safety, the internet and vandalism to hopefully influence the decision making of our young people while they develop. When I am at the primary schools I also pop in to the nurseries so all the children in the school can get to know me and hopefully learn that the police are friendly and there to help them.
